Rally to defend SHAC!

Rally 12 noon Friday November 28 @ 272 Faraday Street Carlton!

The Student Housing Action Cooperative (SHAC) is a collective of students and supporters who have been occupying four vacant buildings owned by the University of Melbourne for nearly four months. The students are campaigning to highlight the housing crisis and to secure some affordable student housing in the Carlton area.

The students are demanding that Melbourne University hand over the buildings so that they can be turned into a student run housing cooperative. But the University is refusing to budge. They have told SHAC to leave by the 28th of November or face eviction.

The students have made clear that they are not going anywhere. UNITE supports their stand and encourages all of our supporters to attend the rally this Friday. We call on Melbourne University to meet the demands of SHAC in full!

UNITE sees the issue of housing affordability as linked to the issues of low pay and casualisation. It is on this basis that we support SHAC and every struggle that will improve the living standards of young people and students.

The studnts also have the support of the University of Melbourne Student Union, the RMIT Student Union and the NTEU Branch at Melbourne Uni.
