UNITE launches national petition campaign

UNITE will launch its national petition campaign this Monday in Melbourne, Bourke Street Mall. Unite aims to gather a minimum of 10,000 signatures to present to federal parliament.
Lets make the politicians take note, and make casualisation an election issue!

The petition will read-

To the Hounarable the Predident and Members of the Senatein Parliament assembled:

Australia has the highest rate of casualisation in the world, behind only Spain, with 27% of Australian workers employed as casuals. Employers are using casual positions to avoid paying thier staff basic entitlements such as holiday pay and sick pay, and failing to provide any form of job security. We beleive that casual workers should have the right to convert to permanent part time or full time employment where the need for such work exists.

We therefore demand that all casual positions become permanent after a maximum period of six months in order to prevent the exploitation of casual staff.

We also demand that the Commonwealth legislate to provide greater definitionof ‘casual work’ in order to minimise casualisation and create genuine permanent employment.
